About Practice Cat

What is it?

Practice Cat is a new Android app designed to help musicians practice efficiently.

It is suitable for players of any instrument who want to:

  • improve their practice habits.
  • keep the music they’re working on in a single, easily accessible place.
  • track their progress.

Practice Cat is not a music tuition app (it does not listen to, analyse or provide feedback on your playing). What it does do is help you make the best use of your time when practicing.

It does this by supporting two key principles:

  • Focus on small chunks of the music at a time.
  • Apply a variety of different practice techniques to the same material.

How does it Work?

Add music scores to your repertoire:

  • Import a musical score, or piece from your device (PDF, images, or camera scans).
  • Practice Cat detects measures (bars) automatically. You can edit them if necessary.
  • You can define sections within the piece to represent movements or other divisions.

Prepare a practice session:

  • You choose a section and decide which techniques to use.
  • You can adjust the size of the excerpts (chunks) that you want to work on, how many times you want to repeat each excerpt, and other preferences.

Start a practice session:

  • Practice Cat presents you with excerpts to practice.
  • You can set a tempo for each section/technique, and there is a built-in metronome.
  • You play them and provide your own feedback on how well you played.
  • Practice Cat uses that feedback to optimise which excerpt to show next.

View your progress

  • While practicing, you see a simple colour-coded visualisation of the section you’re working on, which fills in and gets greener as you improve.
  • You can also see a “pie chart” view of all the sections you practiced recently, showing at a glance how well prepared you are for each one.

Pick up from where you left off, any time

  • Your progress, preferred techniques, tempo, and other preferences from your last session are automatically saved.
  • You can resume practicing a section with a single click.
